Find Your Place

Book Review and More from Authors of Color Around the World

Letter from the CRO:

Welcome to The Black BookMark, where you will Find Your Place!

I've been an avid reader my entire life, a gift encouraged by my West Indian parents. When I was  a kid, I would speed read through just about any book I could find. And there were many.

I particularly enjoyed books about people from other lands. I was always curious about what life was like outside Hartford, CT. I assumed that it was all non stop glamour and I loved reading about the exotic locales that other kids grew up in.

Older now, I realize it is those everyday, personal stories that connect us. The common hopes, dreams, and desires that we want for ourselves and our families. I  couldn't be happier to bring it all together at last.

My love of multicultural literature combined with  filling a much needed gap for uniting authors and readers of color.

Why spend hours at bookstores that relegate Black and Brown authors to a few dusty shelves? And then, only have limited selections in limited quantities. The Review of the Month, Alek by Alek Wek, had only 2 copies in the African-American section and a few others at the bottom of a crowded book rack.

As is discussed in the article, Chaos in the Bookstore, books are getting harder to find in the one place they shouldn't be-bookstores. Authors of color are being squeezed even harder as shelf space shrinks. No matter what We write- political science, autobiographies or fiction- all are stuffed together and labeled  under "African-American". We need better than that. We deserve better than that. We need a place of our own-away from the crowded, competitive stores.

Find Your Place, here.
